Notepad++ is an excellent, free and simple text editor that is quick to get running. It’s great for HTML, CSS, and PHP (and much more). It is an ideal editor to use in lieu of starting a large IDE. Notepad++ has many features and user supported plugins that can be installed to extend the editor, so you only use what you need. When we need to do quick edits this is the tool.

I used Notepad++ for years but was forced to look for a multiplatform solution when I had to work in three OS environments (Mac, Windows, Linux). I had since discovered jEdit and haven't looked back. jEdit is everything I loved about Notepad++ but is multi-platform with built in SSHFS/FTP client. Perfect for web designers. If you like Notepad++ but aren't working in native Windows, give jEdit a swing.

On a Mac I really Like BBedit much more then notepad++.
